St Augustine FL Lighthouse

St. Augustine Lighthouse
The St. Augustine lighthouse was erected between the years of 1871 and 1874, and was the first lighthouse built in Florida. Located on the northern end of Anastasia Island, the historic location of the first original lighthouse had to be moved due to shoreline erosion. The first lighthouse was located approximately 500 yards northeast of the current location, however it fell into the sea in 1880.

The St. Augustine lighthouse was, and still is a working lighthouse that aids in navigation and serves the area. The lighthouse is owned by the non-profit organization, The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum, and they oversee the light station. In the years prior to 1955, when the lighthouse was automated, the St. Augustine lighthouse had to keep three lighthouse keepers at a time. During the 19th century, the keepers lived in the two-story keeper house that was adjacent to the lighthouse. Today, the keeper’s home is now home to the museum.

The lighthouse stands 165 feet above sea level at its highest point, it has 219 steps, and the top of the lighthouse can still be accessed by visitors. Visitors who wish to go to the top and view the observation deck must walk up the 219 steps, as there are no elevators in the historic St. Augustine lighthouse. Visitors enjoy going to the top of the lighthouse, learning the history of its construction, and walking through the museum which serves as a tribute to those who worked and lived at the lighthouse, and also information about various roles that the lighthouse has played throughout important times in history.

The St. Augustine lighthouse is open year round to the public and is always a favorite stop for people enjoying their St. Augustine vacations! Be sure to check about the St. Augustine lighthouse, an important historic site in Florida.
